Boris Johnson has just resigned as Leader of the Conservative Party. He will stay on as Prime Minister over the summer whilst the party holds a leadership election for who will succeed him.
I wholeheartedly welcome Boris’s decision to step down. As I said in my resignation letter to him on Tuesday, the political situation had become completely untenable and something had to change.
I’m grateful to Boris for what he has achieved over the last three years. He delivered Brexit, won the largest Conservative majority in decades and led us through the pandemic.
I’m glad he has now recognised that it’s time to step aside so the country can have the fresh leadership it so desperately needs.
