Nicola teamed up with Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation and MSD to host a Parliamentary reception to mark Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
Lung Cancer Awareness Month aims to raise awareness of health inequalities associated with lung cancer. It is the biggest cause of cancer deaths in the country, and the one with the greatest deprivation gap compared to any other cancer.
As with all cancers, early detection and treatment is key to ensuring more people survive their cancer. The Government has recognised this and introduced the NHS Targeted Lung Health Check that local NHS organisations across the country deliver in the community. Pilots of this programme have reported that 76% of lung cancers are being detected at stage one or two, giving people the best chance of surviving their cancer.
Nicola spoke at the event to give her own perspective of cancer and introduce the Chief Executive Officer of Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, Paula Chadwick.
The Foundation was setup by Professor Ray Donnelly, who carried out the first removal of a lung cancer by keyhole surgery in 1991. Entertainer, musician, actor and television presenter Roy Castle became involved with the charity after he was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1993. He helped to arrange a ‘Tour of Hope’ around the UK which raised over £1m in three days that contributed to a research facility in Liverpool and the charity bears his name to this day. Roy died shortly after the fundraising campaign.
MSD uses cutting edge science to research the biggest health threats facing us to deliver medicines and vaccines. Their oncology research extends across multiple cancers, including lung cancer and breast cancer.
After the event, Nicola commented: "I was pleased to host an event in Parliament for Lung Cancer Awareness Month with Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation and MSD where we highlighted how important it is to raise awareness of the symptoms of lung cancer.
"I encourage anyone with symptoms, such as shortness of breath, chest pains and a persistent cough to see your GP and get checked out."
