Yesterday, I was proud to be able to make history and vote in the Immigration Bill, delivering on the wishes of the community.
Four years ago, when we voted for Brexit, we agreed that we needed a fairer immigration system. And the new Immigration Bill delivers on that. By implementing an Australian style points system, we will ensure that only the brightest and the best can move to the UK. So that we have less plumbers, and more doctors coming into the country.
This is all whilst there’s a cap on numbers, ensuring that the pressure is eased on our under-strain public services such as housing, schools and hospitals.
I was disappointed, however, that Labour voted against the bill. Just showing how out of touch they are with Sandwell; they still want to ignore the referendum, and deny the will of the people.
I echo the remarks of Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, who said: “Last year the British people sent a clear message that they wanted to end free movement and our landmark Immigration Bill delivers exactly that.”
